IPEDS is a database for student enrollment data and related information. It is used to generate data for the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study (NPSAS) and National Survey of Postsecondary Faculty (NSPF), as well as to provide public information, such as the College Navigator. The IPEDS data set contains 12 survey components that are divided into three reporting periods. These components include basic institutional contacts, student services, tuition and fees, and defining characteristics of the institution.
RTI International collects IPEDS data

For more than two decades, RTI International has been responsible for collecting IPEDS data from thousands of postsecondary institutions across the country. The organization collaborates with the National Center for Education Statistics to make the information available. The data includes enrollment statistics, graduation rates, faculty and staff data, tuition costs, financial aid, and more. The data collection process demands high standards of objectivity and accuracy. To help reporting institutions, RTI has a help desk to answer questions and make data submissions as efficient as possible.

The IPEDS data are used by researchers, policymakers, and institutions of higher learning for a variety of purposes. For example, they can help colleges and universities better align their financial aid programs with economic trends and identify equity issues. The data are also disaggregated by race and gender, making them an excellent resource for identifying and addressing equity issues.
NCES interprets IPEDS data

It’s crucial that you understand how the NCES interprets IPEDS data to ensure that you’re compiling accurate data. IPEDS reporting requires careful data entry, and it’s important to follow the instructions to avoid mistakes. As a result, it’s important to get multiple eyes on your data to ensure accuracy. You can also use data management solutions to minimize manual data entry and check for errors. The reporting process can be complex, but by knowing what to expect, you can ensure a smooth reporting process.

The NCES interprets IPEDS data to help educational entities make better decisions. This includes policymakers, educators, and parents. The NCES regularly conducts IPEDS surveys and publishes results in formats that will be useful to students, parents, and researchers.
Institutions must upload student records

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, establishes requirements for the privacy of student records. It regulates who can view and obtain student records, and how institutions release those records. Ohio State University complies with this law. A copy of the FERPA policy is available online, as well as at the Buckeye Link and college offices. If you have questions about the law, or want to review your student records, you should contact the Registrar or the office in your college or university that maintains the records.

To upload student records, you need to have the required documents. You will need transcripts and academic documents from each college or university you attended. Each country has its own requirements for these documents. For example, a transcript must contain the degree conferral printed on it. If a diploma isn’t printed on the transcript, you will need to upload a certified English translation.
Institutions must provide clear data sources for IPEDS data

To submit IPEDS data, institutions must designate a keyholder, who is responsible for the submission of data from their institution. The keyholder is ultimately responsible for entering data, but may designate up to 16 other people to assist in the process. The keyholder is also responsible for locking the survey after data entry is complete.

The IPEDS survey includes a series of web screens that include previously reported data. This data is pre-populated for some items in the Institutional Characteristics component, such as tuition and required fees, but survey respondents are instructed to update this information to reflect current enrollment information. In addition, the data screens for the other components of IPEDS include data from previous reporting years.
